any Y2K swappers out there?

Evelyn, this is for you! After you commented about siggy squares and yours was from Cape Cod with a humpback whale, it sounded so familiar! I went and looked and there you were! Right on my Ohio quilt. It was featured in the Y2K exhibit in Houston in 2000. And that's where I met Nancy in person. What a small, small world! It made me start thinking...how many others participated in the Y2K swap? I did enough for 5 quilts! My husband made me continue. He was totally fascinated with the swaps I got from all over the world. Actually, my Ohio quilt is my second quilt, the first one had only ONE siggy/fabric from each state, each province of Canada, each territory of Australia and numerous European, Asian and African countries. This Ohio quilt actually appraised more than the other one that had so much more variety in it and it was hand quilted by my Amish friend. This Ohio quilt has lots of duplicate states, countries, etc. But it was the machine quilting by Diana Huff, the Quilt Elf, that made this quilt sing. She drafted out the counties and quilted in the counties and a few rivers!! So, there you go, long armers, you can really make a quilts value increase by awesome quilting.

Wow! I can't believe it!!! There is my siggy - one of the earlier ones - before I started adding the heart. My Y2K story - my Mom had cancer while I was making this quilt. She delighted in seeing a finished block while I read her the bio the swapper sent. It was a great motivator for me to swap and sew everything together as fast as possible. After she lost her battle, I put it all away, but some day... some day I will pick it up again and finish it.

Obviously, if you have my siggy, I have one from you - so thank you for being part of my Mom's entertainment during a difficult time.

The quilting on your Y2K quilt sounds really fabulous and creative - the perfect quilting for this type of quilt! I can not believe you swapped enough for FIVE quilts! That sure is a ton of swapping!!! It was a fun craze though.

Cheers!

Evelyn

I swapped for Y2K but chopped down the squares in a moment of madness into diamonds! They are still in a bag with a very few pieced over paper. My siggie squares I know I lost by mistakenly putting them in a bag that subsequently went to a charity group and I was unable to retrieve them :-(

WOW - awesome quilt, great story, etc.

I got on the band wagon late (started quilting in 2000-2001 after the swaps), but was able to buy a set from a gal who swapped several like you for the equavalent in yardage...

thanks for sharing a unique quilt with a great story! and the small quilting world connection..just keeps delighting me when I come across someone I met online way back when..I came back to quilting in 1999 but chose not to jump into the y2k swapping...it seemed too overwhelming to me at that point. Love the stories and incredible quilts I have had a chance to see and hear.

Evelyn, it's nice to hear that it was a good diversion for your Mom. I'm sorry about your loss though. Maybe one day you'll get those little blocks out and have very fond memories of your last days with Mom.
